Città di Cantù 30th International Piano and Orchestra Competition - REGULATION

1. The CITTÀ DI CANTÙ piano competition is reserved to pianists of all nationalities born after December 31st, 1984.

2. Candidates must send their application form, duly filled in, within May 31st 2020 (please send us by e-mail the application sent by post) to the Competition Secretary’s Office, enclosing the following documents:
• Copy of identification document
• 1 size photo
• curriculum Vitae written in English of about 400 characters

• Upon receipt of the candidate’s application form, it will be sent to candidates by e-mail the credentials to upload the video on the dedicated ftp channel which constitutes the preliminary test as per article 10
Administrative fees will not be reimbursed for any reason.

3. The video must contain at least one piece by the author whose concert will be executed during the competition.
Video features: in 1080 HD with fixed shooting without detachment to see hands and face for a minimum duration of 7 minutes and a maximum of 15 minutes
• Deadline to send the video to the competition: May 31st 2020
• On June 15th 2020 the names of the semi-finalists will be published on the website and on Facebook account of the competition

The jury will select 30 semi-finalists (15 for section A and 15 for Section B)

4. Candidates will not be admitted to the preliminary tests of the contest without the payment of the administrative fees (30 euro)

The administrative fees will not be reimbursed for any reason.

5. The jury’s decisions are final and irrevocable.

6. Since 2 years before the competition the members of the jury must not have had continuous didactic relations with any candidate (from 1 January 2018 to 1 May 2020) and have to sign a statement to that effect.

7. In case two candidates are joint winners of a prize, the jury can divide the reward in equal parts.

8. The jury can decide not to give any reward if no candidate is worthy.

9. The performances are to be given by heart. 

10. The competition includes three stages:
• preliminary test by sending the video (see art. 3)
• semi-final test with orchestra in Cantu’
• final tests with orchestra in Cantu’

11. The winners will play free in the award giving concert. A possible refusal will involve the cancellation of the award.

12. In case of radio or television productions or tape and/or video recordings of the tests, the participating candidates have no right to advance claims or financial request towards producers
or transmitters.

13. The 30 semi-finalists:
• They will be hosted in family (bed & breakfast)
• All tests will be recorded in streaming;
• to all participants will be given a professional audio recording of the rehearsals and the performance with the M. Jora Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Maestro Ovidiu Balan;
• They will also be presented to the public and to the press with a brochure containing photos,a short curriculum (400 characters) and their program

SECTION B
Mendelssohn: 1st
Chopin: 1st, 2nd
Schumann: A minor
Liszt: 1st, 2nd, Totentanz
Brahms: 1st, 2nd
Ciaikovski: 1st
Grieg: A minor
Ravel: G major
Rachmaninov: 1st, 2nd, 3rd, Rhapsody on Paganini’s theme
Gershwin: F major, Rhapsody in blue
Prokofiev: 1st, 2nd, 3rd
Dimitri Shostakovich: 2°

15. Candidates will be able to enter themselves in several sections after having paid relative enrolment fees.

16. CALENDAR

Preliminary tests:
Video sent within March 15th 2020 (see art. 3)

Semi final tests:
September 15th and 16th 2020
Section A
First movement of the concert with orchestra
September 17th and 18th 2020
Section B
First movement of the concert with orchestra

Final tests:
Will be admitted 3 candidates per section selected by the jury
September 19th 2020
Section A and Section B
The whole concerto with orchestra & Award ceremony

17. The candidates awarded at the “Città di Cantù” piano competition pledge that in the future they will use the title actually given by the jury. For any controversy the court of Como will be competent.

18. Participation to the competition implies the tacit consent of the above.

19. If there is dispute about the interpretation of the regulations, the valid text will be the Italian one.

HOSPITALITY
To the first applicants the organization will offer hospitality in families (bed&Breakfast).
The organization, at the request of the non-hosted in family, propose a form of “Bed&Breakfast” to a maximum cost of 30 euros.
If candidates want hospitality in families they will ask for it in their application form.
