Città di Cantù 32nd International Piano and Orchestra Competition - REGULATION

1. THE “CITTÀ DI CANTÙ”

The 32nd International Piano and Orchestra Competition “Città di Cantù” 2024 is open for pianists of all nationalities born after December 31st 1988.

2. APPLICATIONS

2.1 All candidates must send their duly completed registration form by 20th March 2024, attaching the following documents:

- Copy of valid I.D.
- 1 photograph in digital format
- Copy of the cadenza for Mozart’s concerts (see art. 6.1 sec. A)
- Proof of payment of 30.00 Euros via PayPal for secretarial fees ( https://paypal.me/PianoCompetition?locale.x=it_IT )

2.2 Togheter with the registration form, the candidates are also asked to send a video recording, which constitutes the preliminary test (see art. 3).

2.3 The candidate will receive by email the credentials to upload the video (on a dedicated and private YouTube channel).

2.4 Secretarial fees will not be refunded for any reason.

3. VIDEO

3.1 The video must contain the First Movement of the Concert with which the candidate intends to participate in the Competition.

If the candidate intends to participate with one of the below Concerts, the candidates must send the video recording of the full concert:
- F. Liszt Concerto n° 1
- F. Liszt Concerto n° 2
- F. Liszt Totentanz
- G. Gershwin Rhapsody
- S. Rachmaninov Rhapsody op. 43

3.2 The concerts in the video recording must be performed accompanied by a second piano or an orchestra.

3.3 The video recording must be recent, recorded not before May 1st, 2023.

3.4 Video features: 1080 HD with fixed shot without interruptions or editing. The candidate’s hands and face must be visible.

3.5 The video recording must be sent by 20th March 2024.

4. SEMI-FINALS

4.1 The list of candidates ammitted to the semi-finals will be published on the website and social media pages of the Competition by 15th April 2024.
The examining committee will select 24 semi-finalists, 12 for Section A and 12 for Section B (see art. 6 PROGRAM).

4.2 Candidates admitted to the semi-finals will have to pay a registration fee of 200.00 Euros via PayPal
( https://paypal.me/PianoCompetition?locale.x=it_IT )

4.3 In case of no payment of the secretarial fees (see art. 2), the candidate will not be admitted to the pre-selection of the Competition.

4.4 In case of no payment of the registration fee, the candidate will not be admitted to the semi-finals.

4.5 The registration fee will not be refunded for any reason.

4.6 The decisions of the examining committee are final.

4.7 Candidates must not have had continuous teaching relationships with one or more members of the jury in the previous two years. The examining commitee reserves the right to request a declaration as proof, signed by the candidate.

4.8 The concerts must be performed by heart.

4.9 During the Semi-Finals, the candidates will have to perform the 2nd and 3th movements of the Concerto of choice.

4.10 The candidates who will have access to the Finals will have to perform the entire Concert of choice.

5. COMPETITION

5.2 All rehearsals and concerts are open to the public.

5.3 In addition, the winners of specific prizes will perform free of charge in the prize concerts (see art. 7.5). Any refusal will result in the cancellation of the awarded prize.

5.4 In the case of radio or television production or audio and/or video recording of the competition and of prize concerts, the participating candidates have no right to make any financial claims or requests.

5.5 Candidates must accept the waiver of registration rights.

5.6 All competitors are required to be present until the last evening of the competition scheduled for May 11th, even for the possible delivery of additional prizes offered by institutions and sponsors. In case of absence, these prizes will not be awarded.

6. PROGRAM

6.1 Candidates are asked to choose a concert for Piano and Orchestra from the following:

SECTION A
- Bach: BWV 1052, 1053, 1054, 1055, 1056, 1057, 1058
- Mozart: K 271, 413, 414, 415, 453, 466, 467, 482, 488, 491, 503, 537, 595
- Beethoven: all
- Haydn: D Major

N.B.: For Mozart concertos, candidates must indicate which cadenza they will perform. If it is written by the candidate and therefore not published, the candidate is required to attach a copy of it, together with the requested material.

- F. Chopin: Concerto n° 1 op. 11, Concerto n° 2 op. 21
- R. Schumann: Concerto in A minor op. 54
- F. Liszt: Concerto n° 1, Concerto n° 2, Totentanz
- F. Mendelssohn: Concerto n° 1 op. 25

6.2 Candidates have the right to register for multiple sections of the competition, upon payment of the relevant registration fees.

7. PRIZES

7.1 The following prizes are foreseen for Sections A and B:

SECTION A
1st prize €5,000, 2nd prize €2,000, 3rd prize €1,000.

SECTION B
1st prize €5,000, 2nd prize €2,000, 3rd prize €1,000.

7.2 For the Young Talents Section see Young Talents Regulations.

7.3 In case two candidates are ranked equally, the examining committee may divide the prize equally (ex-aequo).

7.4 The examining committee may decide not to award all prizes, if it does not deem any candidate worthy.

7.5 In addition to the prizes indicated in the Art. 7.1 and 7.2, special prizes, concert activities and scholarships are provided to the most deserving candidates. These prizes are offered by institutions, sponsors and private associations and they will be communicated through the Competition’s social channels.

7.6 The awarding of Prizes and Recognitions will take place during the Final Awards Ceremony scheduled for the evening of May 11th.

8. DISPUTES

8.1 The candidates awarded at the 32nd International Competition for Piano and Orchestra “Città di Cantù” 2024 undertake to use the title awarded by the jury in the future.

8.2 Participation in the Competition is equivalent to tacit consent of the above written.

8.3 In the event of complaints or disputes, the Italian text of these terms and conditions will be valid.
